I'm ready for REAL change!

Procrastination Isn't Laziness. It's Often Fear.

🌿 Procrastination Isn't Usually Laziness... It's Often Fear.

One of the things I notice when I work with people in recovery is that procrastination is rarely about being lazy.

It's usually about fear.

πŸ˜” Fear of being judged. Fear of rejection. Fear that if someone really knew us, they wouldn't love or accept us. Fear that it isn't safe to be vulnerable. For many of us, especially those who experienced childhood trauma, honesty wasn't always met with love. It may have been met with criticism, shame, punishment, or abandonment. We learned to stay quiet, avoid conflict, hide our feelings, or make ourselves small just to survive. So when recovery asks us to become rigorously honest, our minds may want to move forward, but our nervous system remembers what it once took to stay safe.

😟 Fear of what we'll find when we take an honest inventory.

🌱 Fear of change.

πŸ¦‹ Fear of letting go of old identities.

😣 Fear of failing.

✨ Fear of succeeding.

πŸ’” Fear of disappointing others.

🫢 Fear of discovering that we've been carrying pain we buried years ago.

Sometimes it goes even deeper.

For many of us, childhood trauma taught us that staying small was safer than being seen. We learned to avoid conflict, avoid mistakes, avoid emotions, or avoid anything that made us feel vulnerable. Procrastination became protection.

🧠 Our nervous system isn't saying, "I don't want to."

❀️ It's often saying, "I don't feel safe."

That doesn't mean we stay stuck there.

πŸ’‘ One thing I often remind people is this:

"The disease says, 'Wait until you feel ready.' Recovery says, 'Take the next right action, and your feelings will catch up.'"

πŸ“– From an AA perspective, procrastination is also fed by self-centered fear. The Big Book says, "Fear was an evil and corroding thread; the fabric of our existence was shot through with it." Much of our fear centers on what others think of us, whether we'll be enough, whether we'll lose something, or whether we'll have to face ourselves. As we work the Steps, we begin trusting God more than our fears.

πŸ™πŸΌ Recovery teaches us something beautiful: we don't have to feel ready before we take action.

πŸ“š The Big Book doesn't ask us to be perfect. It asks us to be willing.

So when someone says to me, "I just haven't started," I often hear something much deeper.

πŸ’ "I'm scared."

And that's okay.

πŸ’ͺ🏼 Courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is taking the next right step while fear is still sitting beside you.

When someone tells me they haven't started their Step work, I don't shame them. I understand. I've been there.

I simply encourage them to do the next right thing.

πŸ“– Read one page.

πŸ“ Write one sentence.

πŸ“ž Make one phone call.

πŸ™πŸΌ Pray one honest prayer.

✨ Progress quiets fear.

πŸ’ͺ🏼 Action builds courage.

🌿 Confidence doesn't come before action. It comes because of action.

πŸŒ… The solution isn't waiting until fear disappears.

The solution is taking one small action anyway.

Every time you choose action over avoidance, you're teaching your brain that you're safe.

Every time you tell the truth, you weaken fear's grip.

Every time you show up, even imperfectly, you build trust with yourself, with God, and with others.

Over time, those tiny acts of courage become a new way of living.

I tell others exactly what I tell myself:

✨ Perfection is not the goal. Progress is.

And if all you did today was stay sober...

❀️ That is not a small victory.

πŸ™ŒπŸΌ That is a miracle.

One day at a time.

One step at a time.

One honest action at a time.

🌸 That's how recovery works.

β€οΈπŸ™πŸΌ That's how lives are rebuilt.
