# One Alcoholic Helping Another: Why Lived Experience Matters ✨

What impacted me deeply in the Big Book this morning was not just the words… but the WHY behind them.

The Big Book explains that one alcoholic could reach another alcoholic in a way many others could not. Not because alcoholics are “better,” smarter, or more qualified… but because there is something POWERFUL about shared lived experience. 🙏🏼

✨ The suffering is understood
✨ The hiding is understood
✨ The obsession is understood
✨ The shame is understood
✨ The surrender is understood

That understanding creates:
• CONNECTION 🤝
• SAFETY 🕊️
• IDENTIFICATION ❤️
• HOPE ✨

When Bill realized he might drink again, the book says:

“To save himself he must carry his message to another alcoholic.”

That is PROFOUND.

Not to make money 💰
Not to build status 🏆
Not for recognition 👏🏼

But because helping another alcoholic was part of HIS own healing and survival. 🙏🏼

Then later the Big Book says:

“Our alcoholic work is an AVOCATION.”

That word stopped me in a completely different way this morning because I finally understood what it meant.

Not just intellectually.
PERSONALLY.

## What Does “AVOCATION” Mean? ✨

An avocation is:
• A CALLING 📖
• PURPOSE driven work 🔥
• Something tied to the SOUL 🕊️
• Work done from the HEART ❤️
• Service connected to IDENTITY and MEANING ✨
• Something BIGGER than a paycheck, status, or profession
• A LIFE MISSION rooted in passion, purpose, and experience 🌱

That resonated deeply with me because THAT is EXACTLY why I do what I do.

Helping people heal is not something I randomly chose as a career path.

This work grew out of:
• PAIN 💔
• SURVIVAL 🥀
• ALCOHOLISM 🍷
• TRAUMA 😞
• RECOVERY 🙏🏼
• rebuilding my life from the INSIDE OUT ✨

This is not simply a profession to me.

This is PERSONAL.

That is the part I need people to understand.

When someone simply says:
“She’s a counselor,”

it can unintentionally reduce my voice to:
• a TITLE
• a PROFESSION
• something learned from textbooks 📚

But what I carry did not come from textbooks alone.

My understanding came from:
• sitting in the DARKNESS myself 🌑
• living with INTERNAL CHAOS 🌪️
• hiding pain behind functioning
• feeling emotionally BROKEN 💔
• struggling with SHAME and FEAR
• rebuilding my life through RECOVERY ✨
• learning SURRENDER 🙏🏼
• doing deep SPIRITUAL and EMOTIONAL work 🕊️
• staying sober ONE DAY AT A TIME ☀️
• healing the TRAUMA underneath the addiction
• walking through the FIRE myself 🔥

The counseling education gave LANGUAGE to my experience.

But the EXPERIENCE came first.

That distinction matters deeply to me.

Because I am not speaking TO alcoholics from the outside looking in.

I am speaking AS one.

I know what it feels like when your mind will not shut off.
I know what it feels like to secretly suffer while appearing “fine.”
I know what it feels like to feel emotionally exhausted, ashamed, dysregulated, disconnected, afraid, and spiritually sick.

And I also know what HEALING feels like. ✨

That is why this work is SACRED to me. 🙏🏼

It is not:
• PERFORMANCE 🎭
• EGO
• SUPERIORITY
• me trying to “fix” people

It is one human being saying:

“I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE… AND RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE.” ❤️

That is why the Big Book says:

“One alcoholic could affect another as no nonalcoholic could.”

Because IDENTIFICATION matters.

People heal when they feel:
• UNDERSTOOD 🤝
• SAFE 🕊️
• SEEN ❤️
• emotionally connected
• not judged
• NOT ALONE ✨

Lived experience reaches people differently because there is AUTHENTICITY behind the words.

Not rehearsed answers.
Not theory alone.

TRUTH.

And THAT is why the word AVOCATION mattered so much to me this morning.

Because this work is connected to my actual LIFE STORY.

It is woven into:
• my SOBRIETY ✨
• my HEALING ❤️
• my LOSSES
• my TRAUMA
• my SPIRITUAL GROWTH 🙏🏼
• my rebuilding
• my PURPOSE 🔥
• my RECOVERY JOURNEY 🌱

So yes… I am studying.
Yes… I am learning clinical tools.
Yes… I value education deeply.

But please understand:

My VOICE was born long before the classroom.

The classroom simply helped me organize, articulate, and strengthen the WISDOM I earned through surviving.

That is why this matters so much to me.

I never want people to believe I help others because it is a “career.”

I do this because RECOVERY SAVED MY LIFE. 🙏🏼

And now helping others heal has become part of my PURPOSE, RESPONSIBILITY, and continued RECOVERY.
