🏆 FROM MY KITCHEN... TO NATIONAL TELEVISION ✨
There are moments in life that remind you just how far faith, hard work, and believing in yourself can take you. Competing on The Golden Dish was one of those moments I'll never forget.
Filming wasn't easy. It was right in the middle of COVID, and everything about the experience felt uncertain. I walked onto that set knowing I was competing against two incredibly talented chefs from New York. One of them prepared lobster. I remember thinking, How in the world is a humble tamale going to compete with lobster?
But then something beautiful happened.
When the judges tasted my food, one of them said it was a no brainer.
He explained that the chef cooking lobster didn't really have to do much to make the lobster what it already was. Lobster is naturally luxurious. But what I do... is work. Every layer of a tamale is built from scratch. The masa has to be perfectly seasoned. The fillings have to stand on their own. The chile has to be balanced. Every bite has to tell a story.
Then they tasted my New Mexico Green Chile poured over the tamales and said it didn't need anything except a spoon. 🥹🌶️
Then Celebrity Chef Alex Guarnaschelli said something that completely took me by surprise. She told me I actually had two stars on the plate. Not just my tamale, but my Green Chile Pork smothered over the top. Hearing a chef of her caliber recognize both elements of my dish was something I'll never forget.
What touched me even more was that they didn't just recognize the food. They recognized the love behind it and the story that came with it.
As I shared where these recipes came from, they understood they weren't simply judging a plate of food. They were tasting my Nana, who taught me that feeding people is one of the greatest acts of love. They were tasting my mother, whose strength and traditions continue to live on every time I step into the kitchen. Every tamale carries generations of family, sacrifice, culture, resilience, and love wrapped inside a corn husk.
I'll never forget hearing those words.
To have my work recognized on national television was something I never imagined when I first started making tamales in my kitchen. And sharing that stage with celebrity chefs, including Alex Guarnaschelli and Dr. Oz's daughter, Daphne Oz, made the experience even more special.
Winning wasn't just about a trophy.
It was validation that tradition, authenticity, and years of perfecting a craft matter. It reminded me that staying true to who you are is enough.
I'll always be grateful for that experience, for every lesson it taught me, and for everyone who has supported Nana's Tamales through the years. This wasn't just my win. It belongs to everyone who believed in me long before the cameras ever showed up. It belongs to my Nana. It belongs to my mother. ❤️
Thank you for being part of my journey.
With love,
Michelle Ann 🌸
