One word in todayβs Daily Reflection pierced my heart.
Jul 24, 2026
Not because of what it said…
But because of what it didn’t say.
As someone who came into recovery as a chronic people pleaser, I spent much of my life overworking, overgiving, overfunctioning, and putting myself last, all in the name of wanting to be loved.
Somewhere along the way, I began believing I had to earn my place… earn love… earn acceptance… earn my worth.
Then I read these words:
“Our very lives… depend upon our constant thought of others…”
Not constant doing.
That one word pierced my heart because I realized how often I have confused the two.
But that’s not what recovery has taught me.
The Big Book doesn’t tell me to constantly do for others. It tells me to keep a constant thought of others
There’s a huge difference.
So what does constant thought actually look like?
To me, it’s walking through life asking, “Creator, who can I love today? Who can I encourage? Who can I simply be present with?”
Sometimes helping is sharing my experience.
Sometimes it’s making a phone call.
Sometimes it’s praying for someone.
Sometimes it’s listening.
Sometimes it’s sitting quietly beside another human being so they know they aren’t alone.
Sometimes it’s simply showing up.
Bill W. wasn’t asking us to rescue people.
He was inviting us to live with a heart that’s available to be useful.
One is guided by love.
The other is often driven by fear, guilt, approval seeking, or the belief that my value comes from what I produce.
Recovery has taught me that my first responsibility every morning is to become spiritually fit.
Because…
I cannot pour from an empty cup.
I cannot give away what I don’t have.
I cannot help another alcoholic if I haven’t first connected with my Creator.
I cannot carry a message if my own spirit is starving.
When I’m spiritually fed, I don’t serve out of obligation. I serve out of abundance.
And here’s another realization that brought me so much peace…
Sometimes helping someone doesn’t require doing anything at all.
For those of us who struggle with people pleasing, we often confuse helping with doing.
But recovery is teaching me that my presence can be enough.
I don’t have to rescue everyone.
I don’t have to carry everyone’s burdens.
I simply need to stay spiritually connected so that when I do show up, I bring peace instead of exhaustion.
As they say in the rooms, you can’t transmit something you haven’t got.
Today, I want to carry peace, not burnout.
I want to offer love, not depletion.
And that begins by letting my Creator fill me first.
“Constant thought of others… not constant doing.”
That one sentence changed the way I understand service.
