The Cage I Didn't Know I Was Living In 🕊️✨
Before I ever understood the glass ceiling, I believed I was living inside a cage. Not a cage with bars you could see, but one built from fear, old beliefs, survival, and alcohol. For years, I was convinced that was simply my life. I accepted it. I believed things would never change. As long as I kept drinking, checking out emotionally, and staying busy taking care of everyone else, I never had to face the truth.
The truth was that I had stopped growing.
That is the part that hurts the most to admit. I became an expert at raising my children. I became an accomplished chef. I built businesses. I learned how to survive. I proudly wore the titles of mother, chef, businesswoman, caretaker, and provider. From the outside, it looked like I was succeeding. But somewhere along the way, I stopped becoming Michelle.
Alcohol didn't just rob me of my peace. It robbed me of my growth. It kept me disconnected from the woman my Creator designed me to become. I was living from childhood wounds, limiting beliefs, fear, people pleasing, and survival instead of purpose. My world became smaller and smaller until I couldn't even see the cage anymore because I had become comfortable living inside it.
Yet deep inside me, there was always something whispering, "This isn't who you are." Even when I couldn't explain it. Even when I buried that voice beneath another drink. Even when I settled for less than I deserved. My spirit knew there was more.
Recovery didn't simply teach me how to stop drinking. Recovery taught me how to wake up.
Then I attended the CCAPP Multicultural Conference, and I truly believe I was there for a reason. Being surrounded by people from different cultures, traditions, stories, and healing paths awakened something inside of me. Sitting in talking circles, learning Native traditions, witnessing the beauty of community, and experiencing people who had dedicated their lives to healing reminded me that our purpose is always bigger than our pain.
I didn't leave the conference simply feeling inspired. I left feeling called.
That experience led me to read The Four Agreements, and it was as if another layer of the cage began to fall away. I realized that so much of what I had believed throughout my life wasn't even mine to carry. The stories I believed about myself, the fear, the shame, the expectations, and the limiting beliefs had been handed to me long before I ever had the opportunity to decide whether they were true.
The Four Agreements challenged everything. Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. Those aren't just beautiful ideas. They are a way of living that gently dismantled years of fear and self-deception. They didn't simply change the way I thought. They uncovered the woman who had been waiting underneath decades of survival.
Then I realized something that humbled me.
Maybe the cage wasn't built by one person. Maybe it had been constructed over a lifetime through trauma, addiction, fear, childhood experiences, unhealthy relationships, and every lie I ever accepted as truth. And maybe every time I chose to numb myself with alcohol instead of facing my pain, I unknowingly helped keep the cage locked.
That realization didn't fill me with shame. It filled me with freedom.
Because if I had participated in keeping myself trapped, then by the grace of God, I could also participate in setting myself free.
Today I know my God, my Creator, has been reminding me all along who I really am. Not through shame or condemnation, but through love. Through recovery. Through service. Through culture. Through books. Through people. Through every woman I have the privilege of sponsoring. Through every person brave enough to share their story. Through every opportunity to carry hope into someone else's darkness.
Today I no longer see a cage. I no longer see a glass ceiling. I see open sky. I see possibility. I see purpose. I see freedom. Most importantly, I see a woman who has started growing again.
And that is the greatest miracle sobriety has ever given me.
If my story helps one woman recognize the cage she didn't know she was living in, then every painful chapter of my life has been worth it. The cage was never my destiny. It was simply the place I lived until I remembered who I was.
