“Liquor Ceased To Be A Luxury… It Became A Necessity.”

“Liquor Ceased To Be A Luxury… It Became A Necessity.”
One of the most heartbreaking parts in Bill’s Story is when he describes waking up early in the morning “shaking violently” and needing alcohol before he could even eat breakfast.
That line is powerful because it shows the progression of alcoholism.
This was no longer social drinking.
This was no longer “just having fun.”
This was no longer about pleasure.
His body had become physically dependent on alcohol just to function.
Many people who have never experienced alcoholism cannot fully understand this stage of the disease. They often believe the alcoholic simply lacks discipline, self control, or willpower.
But alcoholism goes far deeper than that.
Alcoholism does not just affect someone emotionally, mentally, spiritually, financially, or relationally.
It affects the BODY deeply.
Many people do not realize how physically malnourished an alcoholic often becomes.
At first, alcohol may seem social, fun, relaxing, or like an escape. But eventually, for the real alcoholic, liquor ceases to become a luxury and slowly becomes a necessity.
The body begins adapting around alcohol.
The nervous system becomes dysregulated.
Blood sugar becomes unstable.
Sleep becomes disrupted.
Digestion weakens.
Hydration decreases.
Vitamin deficiencies begin.
Hormones become imbalanced.
Inflammation increases.
Anxiety and depression worsen.
The brain chemistry changes.
Over time, many alcoholics stop eating properly altogether because alcohol itself becomes the priority.
That is why Bill describes waking up “shaking violently” and needing alcohol before breakfast just to function.
That was not enjoyment anymore.
That was dependence.
The body had become physically addicted and nutritionally depleted.
Many alcoholics become severely deficient in:
• B vitamins
• Magnesium
• Potassium
• Protein
• Electrolytes
• Healthy fats
• Amino acids
Some alcoholics have described becoming so physically depleted that even walking felt exhausting. Others describe severe shaking, weakness, dizziness, panic, sweating, or barely being able to hold objects steadily during withdrawal.
This is why medical detox can sometimes be necessary and even life saving.
Alcohol withdrawal is not always just emotionally uncomfortable.
It can become physically dangerous.
This is one reason early sobriety can feel so physically and emotionally overwhelming.
The alcoholic is not only withdrawing from alcohol…
their body is trying to relearn how to survive WITHOUT the substance it adapted to depending on.
And this is important:
When someone first gets sober, healing does not happen overnight.
The nervous system is still dysregulated.
The body is inflamed.
The brain chemistry is trying to stabilize.
Energy levels crash.
Sleep is inconsistent.
Emotions feel intense.
Anxiety may rise.
The body literally needs nourishment, hydration, rest, structure, support, and time to repair itself.
This is why recovery cannot just be:
“Stop drinking.”
Real recovery often includes:
✨ Proper nutrition
✨ Protein and hydration
✨ Vitamins and mineral support
✨ Sleep restoration
✨ Emotional healing
✨ Spiritual growth
✨ Accountability
✨ Trauma work
✨ Community
✨ Structure and routine
✨ Learning healthy coping skills
The beautiful part is this:
The body CAN heal.
The brain can heal.
The nervous system can regulate again.
Energy can return.
Clarity can return.
Hope can return.
But healing requires consistency, honesty, willingness, and daily action.
And that is why alcoholism is far deeper than “just use willpower.”
Recovery is rebuilding an entire life from the inside out.
